Travel Vlog 4 - Hill of Tara, Co. Meath

♔The Hill of Tara is approximately 93 miles from Belfast, roughly an hour and 40 minute drive mostly via the motorway.

♔There is a decent sized car park with a cafe located just before the site, a visitor's centre in the church, and bins just at the entrance. Dog friendly, as long as your dog is kept on a leash!

♔Tara was traditionally used as the inauguration place & seat of the High Kings of Ireland.

♔It was also known as Teamhair na Rí, Tara of the Kings, and formerly known as Liathdruim, the grey ridge.

♔The oldest visible monument is Dumha na nGaill, the mound of the hostages, and was built around 3200BC. It holds the remains of hundreds of people, as in the Neolithic it was the communal tomb for a single community for almost a century.

♔The biggest and most central of one of the Iron Age enclosures is Ráth na Ríogh, the enclosure of the Kings, which dates back to the 1st century BC.

♔Another enclosure known as the Forradh, or Royal Seat, is believed to be where the Lia Fáil, Stone of Destiny, stands - where the High Kings of Ireland were crowned. According to legend, the stone would cry out whenever the rightful king touched it.

♔Another enclosure, Ráth Laoghaire, Laoghaire's Fort, is said to be the burial spot of the former king.
